Examples of Dr. LaLone's past Practicum in Anthropology Class Projects:

A Practicum is a class in which the emphasis is on enabling a group of students to practice anthropological techniques and gain experiential knowledge of the research process through direct participation in a real-life research project which is organized and coordinated for the class by the professor. The goals of the Practicum class are to provide students with the deep experiential learning and the practical hands-on training that come through participation in a focused and structured semester-long research project under a professor’s instruction and guidance.
The Practicum is taught by Dr.
LaLone as a 400-level class, with regularly scheduled class meeting
times; an organized 15-week curriculum for the semester designed to
engage students in learning and conducting the steps in the
anthropological research process required to carry out a specific
research project; and a set of assessment measures for grading students
on their demonstrated abilities to conduct research, analysis, and
produce a tangible research product(s).
The Practicum differs from independent studies because it is not work
conducted by the student on an independent basis -- instead students
work cooperatively with a team of
student colleagues in a structured class situation to successfully
research and produce project results (as described above). |

The professor sets up the framework for the project, designs the
class experience (including orientations and expected fieldwork
activities), and directs instruction and research activities
throughout the semester. Working within the framework
organized by the professor, the team will play an active role in
decision-making, research, and producing the final product(s).
